It’s important to have the right pet

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

It’s important to have the right pet supplies and knowledge for proper puppy care and kitty care. Just as a child’s body is different from an adult’s, a dog’s or cat’s body is very different when it’s young. A young pet has special nutritional, physical and even mental needs, so a responsible owner must have the pet supplies needed before the little one joins the family.

During their first year, the most important pet supply to have on hand is food. It’s well known that puppies and kittens burn calories and protein at a much higher rate than adults because of their accelerated growth.

Victor rallies for 11th spot at Cadwell

0 Comments | Bath Chronicle, The, May 27, 2010

MOTORCYCLING Victor Cox overcame technical problems and a near fall to finish an impressive 11th in the National Superstock 1000 race as Cadwell Park hosted the British Superbikes last weekend, writes Graham Ravensdale. After struggling to find a race set-up and qualifying 18th, the Bradford biker looked set for a premature finish when he clipped a high kerb on lap four.

However, he stuck his knee out and somehow managed to keep his J&L; Racing Yamaha R1 bike upright, burning a massive hole in his leathers in the process.

One lap later, a red warning light lit up on the instrument nacelle to indicate that the bike’s temperature was rising to an unacceptable level.

Despite the temptation to retire, Cox – continually short shifting due to the power loss – managed to ride at 85 per cent for the remainder of the race.

And his commitment was rewarded when accidents further up the field, including a three-bike crash on the last lap, lifted him from 18th to 11th.

Cox’s team will now completely strip and rebuild the bike for the next outing, on the new Silverstone circuit supporting the Moto GP.

You may have read the old stories about how much weight people put on during the holidays. Well, not surprisingly, those stories are at least partially true. In a recent study conducted by The National Institute of Health, the researchers discovered that, in reality, the average weight gain is just slightly under one pound. Nothing to be bothered about, it seems. Or is it? They also found that a person who is already overweight, will average a five pound weight gain during their holiday.

I can imagine some of you feeling relieved that you may only put on one pound. “That’s no problem,” you may well think. “I’ll lose that in a week when I get back into the old routine.” The problem is though, the study also shows that we all tend to keep the pounds put on.

I JUST read the front-page news “Reunited after ordeal” (NST, July 28) and saw the picture of a happy mother and her two daughters.

Why were they so happy? Because they were reunited after the daughters were abducted and abandoned 20km away in pitch darkness at 11.30pm on Monday. This was in Liman Kati, Kuala Kangsar.

Why did it happen? The mother left the two sleeping beauties in an unlocked car with the engine running to go into a shop for a moment.

How many times have we read of similar incidents? Endless times, until we have lost track of them all. It puzzles me why parents keep doing this despite being warned by police after every incident.

These days, a split second can make a whole world of difference; it can result in death or rape. Some children are forever gone like Tin Shong Sheng, 7, who went missing in 1996 near his school.

The mother in Kuala Kangsar should thank God for sparing her the agony. There’s a lesson to be learned

Students Appear to Be First to Hop on CyberhuntLIVE

PR Newswire, April 27, 2010

PHOENIX, April 27 /PRNewswire/ — CyberhuntLIVE, a patent-pending online treasure hunt game where players can win up to $5000 per week, seems to have great appeal to college students.

Tim Brick, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, attributes this to the college-aged persons’ familiarity with the Internet and online games, as well as the ability to make extra money without leaving their computer. “Our game fits nicely with the college lifestyle. Players log in whenever they have time, over the course of a week, to play the game and win cash.”

The company has also built an Independent Business Developer program, which allows people to earn money selling subscriptions to the site and game sponsorships.

“While the game seems to have great appeal to college students, we have players across the demographic spectrum due to the Independent Business Developer program. People are signing up to play the game, and becoming IBDs once they realize the income potential,” states Mr

These CD-Rs have a lifespan of 10 to 15 years depending on how they are stored. No manufacturer gives more than a decade-long warranty on its CD-Rs.

After the data burn process is completed, the CD-Rs should be stored in a suitable environment that is free from excess moisture, excess heat, magnetic fields and dust particles. These conditions are not suitable for CD-Rs, and can destroy or corrupt the electronic data stored in them. Every manufacturer issues instructions regarding proper upkeep of its CD-Rs, which should be strictly followed.

The use of these CD-Rs is increasing in both organizations as well as domestic households. Families are using this media to store home videos, digital images, movies, games and other important files and folders.

Package holidays make comeback

0 Comments | Evening Times; Glasgow (UK), Jun 14, 2010

package holidays to sun-kissed beach resorts are enjoying a resurgence as families bid to avoid flight cancellations and the fear of airlines going bust.

Despite the volcanic ash cloud disruption and a series of BA cabin crew strikes, the number of passengers taking chartered flights increased by 5.3%, according to BAA.

Industry analysts claim travellers see package holidays as a relatively safe option while the pound’s poor rate against the euro has also driven a preference for all-inclusive trips.

An Abta spokesman said: “There is recognition that you get financial security with a package holiday if companies go out of business.”

The rise of resorts in Egypt and Turkey has also helped reverse a long-term decline in package holidays that had seen tourists opt instead for do-it-yourself trips, he added.

Modi to copy Mao’s healthcare system [Ahmedabad]

0 Comments | Times of India, The, Jul 22, 2010

GANDHINAGAR: It’s not China’s special economic zones that chief minister Narendra Modi wants to replicate in Gujarat. The state government has taken a leaf out of the Chinese cultural revolution of late 1960s, when Mao Zedong formally attacked “western trained” medical system and floated the concept of ‘barefoot doctors’.

The health ministry has decided to compensate for sharp shortage of allopathic doctors in the state by making large-scale appointment of barefoot doctors, even as making massive investments in the ayurvedic and homeopathic sectors.

Soon after the weekly Cabinet meeting, government spokesperson Jay Narayan Vyas said, “We have identified 102 urban health centres, each catering to a population of 50,000, where barefoot doctors will work”. Incidentally, China abolished barefoot doctors system in 1981 after the Maoist phase ended.

To be called ‘Usha workers’, Gujarat’s barefoot doctors will undergo a short training course in providing basic health facilities, to be given in government health centres. “To be mainly women, there will be one barefoot doctor for every 2,000 population living in slum areas,” Vyas said, adding, “The model will closely follow appointment of 27,000 community health workers currently working in rural areas, one for every 1,000 population.”

Mao had sharply criticised the “urban bias” of medical system, changing China’s health policy in 1968 and integrated the barefoot doctors programme into national policy. It is still not known who will train Gujarat’s barefoot doctors, whose outlines have been worked out by state health commissioner VL Joshi. Vyas, who is also health minister, admitted Gujarat would face severe shortage of doctors even as it takes up a huge healthcare check-up of 1.34 crore children in the age group 0-14.

In order to promote local medical system, the government allocated Rs 304 crore for promoting Ayurveda. An ayurvedic medical college and hospital and a training centre will start next to Gandhinagar at Kolavda village with an investment of Rs 152 crore. The Maniben Ayurvedic Hospital in Ahmedabad will get an aid of Rs 8 crore. New ayurvedic hospitals will be set up for Rs 26 crore, even as upgrading present ones for Rs 16 crore. Ayurvedic pharmacy will get Rs 3 crore grant
